Improvements From Breast Reduction
Breast volume (size) varies from woman to woman. Unfortunately, for some women, the breast gland can become quite large and lead to symptoms such as neck and back pain, breast pain, shoulder strap grooving from the excessive tension on the bra, numbness in the hands, and rashes and infections underneath the breast.
Dr. Burden is a renowned, board-certified plastic surgeon skilled in face, breast, and body procedures. An innovator and educator in aesthetics for over 25 years, Dr. Burden pioneered “No Scar on the Breast” augmentation. His expertise and compassionate presence provide a rewarding treatment experience from the initial consultation to the final results.
Meet Dr. BurdenFortunately, reduction of breast volume frequently relieves these symptoms. Comprehensive long-term studies, involving thousands of women, have demonstrated improvement of symptoms following breast reduction surgery. It has been estimated that for every 1 pound of excess breast tissue, between 5 and 8 pounds of torque are applied to the neck and shoulder area. A reduction of approximately 2 pounds in breast volume has been shown to improve the symptoms of overly large breasts in the majority of cases.
There are several techniques available for breast reduction. The technique most frequently used involves making an incision around the nipple and under the breast in order to remove the excess breast gland and skin. This results in an upside down T-shaped incision. Commonly, a breast lift is performed in conjunction with breast reduction to achieve a more youthful breast appearance.
Recovery After Breast Reduction
Most breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with an overnight stay in the surgical facility. Occasionally, inpatient hospitalization for 1 to 2 days may be necessary. Following the surgery, a support bra is worn for approximately 4 weeks.
Prescription pain medications are taken for the first 1 to 2 weeks following the surgery. As the healing progresses, the pain diminishes and activities can be increased.
